The Irish lax loss at Ravens stadium in overtime to Duke was a great victory for every lax team west of the Mississippi! This team from the midwest opened the flood gates for non eastern lax teams to not only compete but to win games. The Irish showed the lax nation that the men from the home of the golden dome could strike it rich in the fertile lax grounds of Baltimore Maryland!
Do you just get a feeling that this Brian Kelly guy, in his own words, is the Right Kind of Guy (RKG)? Let's face it when Notre Dame announced Bob Davie was the new head coach replacing Lou Holtz all Irish fans were taken aback. But in all fairness no one that took over for Lou would’ve cut the mustard in Irish fan's eyes. However, you just kind of knew that Davie just wasn't the RKG for ole ND. Fast forward to George O’Leary, who in my opinion, would have, if nothing more, kept the Irish football team from the depths that Ty Willingham sent it plummeting into. At least O’Leary was excited to be the Notre Dame head football coach. Willingham, on the other hand, did not embrace the fact that he was the head coach of the most storied colligate football program of all time. I will say this, I was fortunate enough to meet Lou, Bob and Ty and all of them are outstanding men, very kind and very receptive to even the fanatic ND fans who are otherwise a nobody or as the labeled non-graduate “Subway Domer” like me. Then we moved on to Charlie Weis. I thought this guy would have taken his alma mater and college football as a whole by storm. After all he orchestrated that high flying potent offense of the three time Super Bowl Champs New England Patriots. All that hiring did was expose the glaring fact that the NFL game is worlds apart from the college game. My good friend Marty McCabe who is the co-host of the Blue and Gold ND Radio Show told me time and again that Charlie was brought in to stop the bleeding, and I will say he did do that, but even though he was a Notre Dame grad you still got the sense that he just wasn’t the RKG. December 2009 ND hires Coach Brian Kelly, and right after his introductory press conference you left with a feeling that this may just be the right guy for the Irish. Coach Kelly epitomizes the University of Notre Dame and its football team. Now I’m old enough to remember the hiring of Lou Holtz, but not Ara. Be that as it may, some of the older Irish fans who I know and love tell me they are getting that same feeling with Coach Kelly as they did when Coach Parseghian was named head coach. I fully understand that only until the wins and losses are tallied over the next few years will we know if Kelly is truly the RKG, but until then I’m gonna bask in this feeling for now!
